Pembangunan Lestari

Menurut Kamus Dewan edisi keempat, pembangunan ditakrifkan sebagai perihal membangun, mencapai kemajuan serta perkembangan. Manakala lestari adalah merujuk kepada keadaan yang tidak berubah-ubah, kekal serta tetap. Oleh yang demikian, pembangunan lestari merupakan satu konsep kemajuan yang mengekalkan sumber alam semulajadi dan ekosistemnya supaya dapat dimanfaatkan

bersama oleh generasi masa depan.

Walaubagaimanapun, pengertian sebenar pembangunan lestari lebih banyak cenderung kepada apa yang termaktub di dalam WCED (Brundtland Report) yang mentakrifkan sebagai ‘keperluan sesuatu aktiviti pembangunan yang dilaksanakan tanpa menjejaskan keperluan untuk generasi yang akan datang’. Keperluan ini merujuk kepada pendidikan, ekonomi, perindustrian dan pembinaan (Tracey, 2008).

Kebanyakkan definisi pembangunan lestari merangkumi tiga idea utama yang saling bergantung iaitu alam sekitar, ekonomi dan sosial. Pada tahun 1987, Barbier telah melakarkan tiga idea ini dalam bentuk tiga bulatan yang saling mengunci antara satu sama lain seperti dalam Rajah 1. Gambaran ini menyatakan objektif pembangunan lestari yang perlu diperkembangkan mengikut persilangan ketiga-tiga idea tersebut. Dengan kata lain ketiga-tiga idea ini haruslah dilaksanakan secara seimbang.
